Context and Vision

Fiumicina is a solar-powered experimental kitchen that reimagines food preparation as a community-driven, sustainable and transformative act. Fiumicina made its debut in 2024 during the Three Days by the River festival, held in the public space along the River Talfer in Bolzano. The event brought people together to cook, share ideas, dance and celebrate the collective experience of preparing food. Fiumicina shifts the food supply chain from private consumption to a collaborative process, emphasising shared labour – from harvesting to cooking – within public spaces. The experimental kitchen addresses the potential of natural commons, such as the sun and water, to inspire climate-conscious and resource-saving practices.

Fiumicina was conceived by Johanna Dehio, Mascha Fehse, and Johanna Padge as part of FLUX – River Interventions and Explorations, a multi-year program developed by Lungomare.

Fiumicina topics and focus areas

  • Environmental Sustainability: Fiumicina raise awareness about solar energy and sustainability, promoting environmentally conscious practices.
  • Experimentation and Culture: Fiumicina provides an opportunity
to experiment with new ways of cooking, creating and sharing experiences, fostering a culture of experimentation and collaboration.
  • Social Integration: The solar kitchen serves as a space for community engagement and co-creation, bringing people together.

What Fiumicina is looking for in 2025

For 2025, Lungomare is seeking new contexts to explore Fiumicina’s potential as both a community tool and a common resource. We are calling for proposals that integrate Fiumicina into existing initiatives or that develop new context- specific ideas. We are looking for creative, community-driven ideas that promote collaboration, sustainability and public engagement.

Timeline and Location

The project must take place between May and August 2025, with a duration ranging from a minimum of one week to a maximum of three months. The location of the project should be within a 100 km radius of Bolzano. Depending on the proposal, we might recommend a longer period of time, taking into account the changing weather conditions as well as the time required to build up a meaningful exchange or encounter.

What Lungomare offers

The selected project will receive:

  • A budget to develop the project: €3,000 (to cover all costs e.g. production, transportation).
Additional funds may be sought by the applicant if necessary.
  • Operational support: project start-up support and a user manual for the solar cooker.
  • Collaborative network: sharing in a stakeholder network related to Fiumicina.

Who Can Apply?

The open call is open to all individuals and collectives, including cultural associations, active citizens, educators, students, agricultural communities and anyone with a sustainable and creative approach to the project’s goals.

Fiumicina encourages participants to engage deeply with their local contexts, experimenting with the solar kitchen as a tool for creative, collaborative

and community-driven projects. By embracing experimental solutions, this initiative invites diverse participants to explore new ways of fostering

sustainability and new connection.

Application Requirements

Applicants are required to fill out the form available at the following LINK↗ by 16 March 2025, at 4 pm. For any questions about the application process, please contact info@lungomare.org before the deadline.

Selection Criteria

We welcome a diverse array of proposals that resonate with the values of Fiumicina, spanning well-structured initiatives to daily practices in fields such as agriculture, education, the arts, social and cultural engagement, culinary traditions and beyond.
